OCTAHEDRONAPUS

Octahedronapus is a fabricated steel sculpture, assembled from multiple octahedrons spiraling out from the center. The octahedron is one of the five Platonic solids, defined by having equal sides, and it is made of eight equilateral triangles. This solid is repeated to create another shape, something of a fractal treatment. The repetition of five solids of increasing/decreasing size is a method I’ve used for many years to create simple geometric spirals.

This repetition of spirals from the center creates a shape somewhat suggestive of some kind of creature, and the further spiral extensions of the lower legs of the piece enhance that feeling. Thus the title. The sculpture has a golden stain patina with the inexorable rust showing through, and will continue to change over time.
